The excitement was evident. We woke up 1.5 hours ahead of
the stipulated time! We couldn’t wait to see what was installed.
We were split up in to two teams. The first two teams got a
hands-on experience with Cambodian pottery, while the other two teams went to
the project area to start our mission. Most of the pottery looked simple, yet
elegant. Everyone thought they could do just the same. We were given an hour
and a half to make our creation. After learning the basics of pottery making,
we began our attempt at various outstanding abstract designsJ.
Upon arrival at the site, we had a satisfying lunch, and got
down to work! We dug sand for the mini-flood barrier for the kitchen. We needed
to get soil by digging deep into the ground. Handling the “chang-kol” and
shovels were no easy tasks! To our surprise, unexpected help came our way! The kids
had finished school and joined us to help transport the soil. The kids were
really impressive! They continued digging even when we were having our water
break. Once we were done constructing, we interacted with the kids and made
lots of friends. We met a special friend and his name was Hei. He had a strong
personality and was physically fit from pulling the bullock carts.
The day ended with tired bodies, but rejuvenated spirits.
The warmth from the kids had given us the reason for our mission!
Our reflection for the day got us pondering about the stark
difference between the life of a Cambodian kid and us. What caused the
difference? What can we do?
