Day 6 - All smiles

To start off the day, we had our usual morning routines and handed over the leadership roles to a new set of leaders. At the project site, there was a different programme arranged today. The night before, we brainstormed some games that the children can play and enjoy together.

For the first telematch, we played ‘piggy-back’ race. Each one of us had to carry five children in total! It was way tiring! For the second telematch, we used skipping ropes, bamboo poles, volleyballs and hoola hoops. We created an obstacle course for the children to skip, spin, and kick! For the last match, we had another ‘piggy back’ race. This time, the children had to carry their friends on their backs (much to our relief) and throw tennis balls into buckets.

After the first session, we had a necessary debrief to iron out all the kinks in our games. During the debrief, most of us pointed out ways to improve and modify the games even though some disagreed with the ideas shared. Eventually, we managed to come to a consensus, all in the spirit of teamwork!

When the second session begun, the games we played were much smoother and efficient! The sight of the smiling children gave us a sense of great satisfaction. It was all worthwhile. After the telematches, we went for a bumpy ride around the village on their mode of transport - the bicycle.

This was a great opportunity to experience the daily lives of the Cambodian children. This achieves one of our main objectives which is to learn the life of the people!  We got to visit the local supermarket today and finally tasted soft drinks for the first time in 5 ½ days! We have to thank the teachers for listening to our pleas. Dancing in joy, we headed back to our homestay, followed by dinner! (rice with deep fried chicken wing ^_^ and chye sim that tasted like wasabi) We prepared mini paper shoes (momentos) for the children in the school.

This amazing day concluded with our daily reflection. We now feel fortunate and appreciative to have many privileges in Singapore (and of course, the soft drinks).
